Drupal's Grand Finale 2024

drupal’s grand finale 2024 (1)

Dear Readers,

The Drupal Community is gearing up for its final and grand global conference of the year, DrupalCon Singapore 2024. Adding to the excitement: the release of Drupal core versions 11.1.0 and 10.4.0 is slated for December 12-13, 2024, immediately after DrupalCon wraps up. The timing is intentional, avoiding overlaps with the main conference days, so developers and site owners can fully enjoy DrupalCon without the distraction of major updates landing mid-event. This careful scheduling is part of Drupal’s tradition of planning minor releases for early December to line up with other technology updates while steering clear of year-end festivities.

The upcoming release will introduce a maintenance minor alongside the latest feature version for the very first time, marking a milestone in Drupal’s release strategy. As explained by Drupal core maintainer Jess (xjm),

"Maintenance minors are a part of our new major release cycle. They allow us to support major releases for four whole years so that Drupal 10 is supported until the release of Drupal 12. We hope that this overlapping support will ease upgrade pains for our community and help make Drupal simultaneously as stable and as innovative as today's site owners need."

To gear up for the release, the alpha phase of Drupal 11.1 started on October 28, 2024, giving developers a head start on testing and preparing for the updates. With beta releases and a release candidate phase lined up over the next few weeks, site owners and contributors are encouraged to dive into the early releases and help ensure a seamless launch. This schedule also gives everyone ample security coverage for Drupal 10.3 and 11.0 until mid-2025, making it easier to plan for upgrades in the new year without rushing.

With that let's move on to the important stories from last week.
