Drupal's Next Evolution: From Layout Builder to Experience Builder
At DrupalCon Lille 2023, Dries announced a strategic initiative to develop a Next Generation Page Builder to enhance the Layout Builder for a more intuitive page-building experience. Recently, Lauri Eskola shared insights into this project in a blog post titled "Working toward an Experience Builder."
The Experience Builder empowers site builders to create fully customized pages and themes directly in the browser using no-code/low-code tools. This tool lets content creators update content independently, while site builders maintain brand consistency.
Drupal will continue optimizing for non-technical users and exploring ways to enable JavaScript developers without managing large code bases. By incorporating the best features of Paragraphs into an expanded Layout Builder, Drupal aims to offer a comprehensive solution that surpasses existing options.
The core committer team prioritizes user experience design and market differentiation. With community support, it aims to release a proof of concept by the first half of 2025.
