BackupScale Releases Drubernetes Terraform Module for Drupal on Kubernetes

BackupScale has released Drubernetes, an open-source Terraform module developed by Colan Schwartz, that fully integrates Drupal sites and related services into Kubernetes clusters. Drubernetes streamlines deployment by securing internal traffic with network policies and unifying public access through a single ingress point.

Driven by the need to consolidate its Drupal-based customer dashboard alongside other microservices, BackupScale moved away from an external Drupal host. The previous setup required exposing internal applications to the Internet and layering extra security measures. By running the dashboard inside the same private Kubernetes network, the company eliminates public endpoints and relies on a single firewall to safeguard all services.

Existing options fell short: Bitnami’s now-deprecated Helm chart stored Drupal code on persistent volumes instead of in version-controlled container images, and Jeff Geerling’s Drupal Operator lost support in early 2025. Building on Geerling’s concept of Kubernetes primitives, Colan crafted Drubernetes as a generic, cluster-agnostic solution compatible with any managed or self-hosted Kubernetes environment.

Drubernetes is available now in the Terraform Registry, offering automated provisioning of Drupal with minimal configuration. Contributions and feedback are welcome via the project’s GitLab repository.
