Centarro Announces PayPal Fastlane Integration for Drupal Commerce
Centarro, the maintainer of Drupal Commerce, has released support for Fastlane by PayPal in the open-source Commerce PayPal module. The new integration introduces a one-page, mobile-optimized checkout designed to accelerate transactions and reduce cart abandonment for merchants.
The update makes Drupal Commerce among the first open-source platforms to natively integrate PayPal’s Fastlane service, a guest-friendly checkout system that remembers customer preferences across participating sites. For U.S.-based merchants, it also provides a direct migration path from PayPal’s legacy gateways such as Payflow Link and Payflow Pro, which are now deprecated.
Fastlane simplifies the online purchasing process by offering two distinct experiences. First-time shoppers can complete their orders quickly and, if they choose, create a Fastlane profile by saving payment and shipping details linked to their mobile number. Returning users simply provide their email address to trigger an SMS verification code, which securely restores stored data to complete the transaction in just a few clicks.
The integration also debuts a single-page checkout for Drupal Commerce, long considered a key usability milestone for the project. This layout combines all checkout steps—contact, shipping, and payment—into one cohesive screen, aligning the platform with modern e-commerce practices and improving conversion rates across devices.
Designed for Speed, Simplicity, and Migration
Centarro describes Fastlane as both a performance and modernization upgrade. While Payflow’s iframe-based gateway had remained static for years, Fastlane introduces a responsive interface that merchants can style within PayPal’s branding compliance rules. Setup follows familiar patterns, requiring API credentials and webhook configuration.
Availability and Technical Requirements
- U.S.-only support: Fastlane currently serves U.S.-based merchants, though international rollout is planned.
- Dedicated checkout flow: Merchants must use the automatically generated “Fastlane by PayPal” flow, placing contact details before payment.
- Single gateway limitation: Fastlane must be the sole active payment gateway unless multiple order types are configured.
- Fallback handling: International customers automatically see a standard credit card checkout form.
Configuration details—including required checkout flow, API integration, and design customization—are documented in the official Drupal Commerce Fastlane guide.
Centarro’s Roadmap and Industry Context
Centarro maintains the Commerce PayPal module with contributions from the Drupal Commerce community and has confirmed that future updates will extend the one-page checkout architecture to other gateways. The company’s roadmap also includes support for vaulted payments, which will allow users to securely store payment details for recurring use.
PayPal has indicated plans to expand Fastlane beyond the United States as part of its broader effort to modernize guest checkout. For the Drupal Commerce ecosystem, this release demonstrates the platform’s ability to keep pace with mainstream payment innovation while maintaining its open-source flexibility.
Merchants and developers can explore setup steps and configuration details in the Fastlane documentation, or read the full announcement by Tom Ashe on the Centarro blog.
