DrupalCon Vienna 2025 Recap: Templates, AI, and the Road to Drupal CMS 2.0
Acquia’s Greg O'Toole recaps DrupalCon Vienna 2025, where the global Drupal community gathered to unveil groundbreaking updates to the platform. Highlights included the rollout of Drupal Templates via the new Marketplace, the forthcoming Drupal Canvas 1.0 for visual site building, and a major AI initiative designed to streamline content creation while keeping human creativity front and centre.
The new Drupal Templates, built on the Mercury Theme, aim to simplify site building through a standardized approach and community-driven sharing via the Drupal Marketplace. Drupal Canvas, expected in November, introduces a drag-and-drop layout editor with Figma integration and AI-assisted page generation.
The AI Initiative expands with tools like the Context Control Center and Model Context Protocol, offering brand-aware automation for content creation. These capabilities will be core to Drupal CMS 2.0, launching January 2026, alongside revamped orchestration tools for internal workflows and external integrations.
O'Toole emphasizes that despite automation advances, Drupal’s momentum stems from its people—developers, designers, and contributors who continue to shape the open web’s future.
