Agileana, a leading web development firm, is set to play a pivotal role in a massive undertaking to migrate over 300 public-facing websites of the U.S. federal judiciary from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10. The project, awarded to Agileana in 2022, encompasses a comprehensive assessment and strategic planning phase, with the subsequent execution phase recently awarded by the U.S. Courts.

This ambitious five-year project involves the creation of an array of tools, migration scripts, templates, modules, and a platform tailored to facilitate the seamless transition of the federal court system's web presence from Drupal 7 to the latest iteration, Drupal 10. Additionally, it includes a comprehensive design refresh for the main site, subsidiary court sites, and the U.S. Courts intranet.

Drupal has emerged as the preferred content management system for 13 of the 15 executive departments within the federal government. With Drupal 7 scheduled for retirement in January 2025, there is a pressing need to expedite the migration of websites to Drupal 10 before the end-of-life deadline.

One of the standout aspects of this project is the creation of a design system inspired by the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS), aimed at enhancing the visual and functional aspects of the U.S. Courts' online presence. This design system will feature reusable components that prioritize usability and accessibility, benefiting both website visitors and content managers.

The U.S. federal court system's last website redesign occurred nine years ago in 2014. The Administrative Office (AO) of the U.S. Courts, on behalf of the Federal Judiciary, supports and oversees the U.S. Courts websites.

Agileana's involvement in this monumental project signifies a significant step forward in modernizing and streamlining the digital presence of the U.S. federal judiciary. As the migration progresses over the coming years, it is poised to deliver an enhanced user experience and greater accessibility for all stakeholders.
