Sustainability Takes Center Stage at DrupalCon Barcelona 2024

The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.

With climate change and sustainable practices discussed more than ever, the most anticipated DrupalCon Europe 2024 in Barcelona has a number of sustainable initiatives listed. Building on the success of DrupalCon Lille 2023 and in continuation of the partnership with TerraVerde Sustainability, the DrupalCon Europe organizers remain committed to advancing sustainability initiatives and creating lasting positive change.

At DrupalCon Lille 2023, sustainability was a key focus, with initiatives aimed at reducing the event's environmental impact. The carbon footprint was measured for the first time, totalling 1,100 tonnes of CO2e, and the event achieved zero food waste by donating leftovers to the local community. The venue used 100% renewable energy, and 38% of suppliers met sustainability criteria.

Additional efforts included a T-shirt and mask donation drive, raising funds through a mascot auction for charity, and introducing a wellness area for attendee well-being, highlighting the event’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

Reaping the seeds of better practices sowed at DrupalCon Lille 2023, DrupalCon Barcelona 2024 aims to prioritize sustainability by implementing a variety of eco-friendly practices throughout the event.

Hosted at the CCIB Barcelona, a venue known for its sustainable solutions, the conference will focus on minimizing food waste by offering locally sourced, vegetarian, and pescatarian options. Efforts to reduce environmental impact also include working with local suppliers, cutting down on printed materials, and transitioning to digital solutions wherever possible. When digitalization isn't feasible, high-quality, recyclable materials will be used. DrupalCon will actively engage attendees, sponsors, and exhibitors in discussions on sustainability while calculating the event's carbon footprint to optimize future DrupalCon Europe events further.

As DrupalCon Barcelona 2024 embraces a greener future, five key sustainability initiatives highlight the event’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

Electronic Devices Collection

DrupalCon Barcelona 2024 is partnering with Trinijove, a local foundation supporting vulnerable groups, to collect unused electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and laptops. Attendees are encouraged to bring old devices and drop them off at the collection box near the registration area. This initiative helps reduce electronic waste while providing resources to those in need, supporting Trinijove’s efforts in social integration.

Train Travel Contest

DrupalCon Barcelona 2024 is incentivizing sustainable travel with its Train Travel Contest, encouraging attendees to reduce their carbon footprint by choosing train travel to the event. Participants can submit their travel data by Thursday, 26 September 2024, at 15:00 CEST, to be automatically entered into a drawing for a chance to win a ticket to DrupalCon Europe 2025. 

By opting for eco-friendly travel, attendees contribute to lowering CO2 emissions and support efforts to make large-scale events more environmentally responsible. The contest winner will be announced during the Closing Ceremony, reinforcing the importance of sustainable practices in event attendance while offering an exciting reward for those making greener choices. Mercè Auction

As DrupalCon Barcelona 2024 draws to a close, attendees have the chance to participate in the Mercè Auction, a unique opportunity to take home the event’s beloved mascot. The auction begins during the Opening Ceremony and runs until Thursday, 26 September 2024, at 15:00 CEST, with bids placed via the mobile app. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to a charity chosen by the highest bidder. This special event not only gives participants a chance to own a piece of DrupalCon memorabilia but also supports a meaningful cause, making it a memorable and impactful conclusion to the conference.

Wellbeing

Recognizing the need for balance, DrupalCon 2024 is offering a dedicated well-being space for attendees to relax and recharge during the event. This area provides a calm environment where participants can take a break from the busy conference schedule, ensuring they stay refreshed and focused. Sponsor Contest

The Sponsor Contest at DrupalCon 2024 celebrates the sustainability efforts of event sponsors, recognizing those who actively work to reduce their environmental impact. Sponsors will be evaluated in three key areas: Traveling, Stand Construction, and Goodies & Leaflets. As attendees explore the exhibition area, they can observe the eco-friendly practices on display. The winner, selected for their commitment to sustainability, will be announced during the Closing Ceremony. This contest highlights the sponsors' green initiatives and promotes broader awareness of sustainable business practices.

Additionally, the organizers of DrupalCon Barcelona kindly request participants to opt for sustainable travel options, such as trains or public transportation, to minimize their carbon footprint. They encourage attendees to use walking, biking, or public transportation to reach the venue and to consider offsetting their carbon emissions through verified programs. 

In the spirit of creating a zero-waste environment, participants are kindly asked to avoid single-use plastics, bring their own water bottles for refilling, assist with waste sorting, and use the Conference App to access materials. Also, take only what is needed during catering, communicate dietary restrictions, and return any reusable containers to designated stations. 

Attendees are requested to prioritize mental well-being by taking breaks, using relaxation areas, and actively engaging in well-being workshops. Finally, they are asked to contribute to a respectful community atmosphere by combatting discrimination, volunteering, sharing knowledge, and participating in sustainable initiatives.
