Merlijn Sebrechts to Present Keynote on WebAssembly at Drupal Developer Days 2025
Drupal Developer Days, taking place April 15–18, 2025, in Leuven, will open with a keynote by Dr. Merlijn Sebrechts on April 15, focusing on WebAssembly’s expanding role beyond the browser.
Titled “WebAssembly beyond the browser,” the 50-minute session will explore how the WebAssembly System Interface (WASI) is transforming software deployment—particularly for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which often suffer from outdated, insecure update cycles. Merlijn will explain how WASI decouples WebAssembly from its browser roots, allowing it to run on microcontrollers, support high-density serverless platforms, and serve as a universal plugin format.
Merlijn is a senior researcher at IMEC and lectures at Ghent University, where he teaches Systems Design, Open Source ecosystems, and Computer Security. His work centers on building deployment platforms and helping organizations streamline software delivery. He also plays an active role in open-source communities, serves on the Ubuntu Community Council, and contributes to the standardization of WebAssembly System Interfaces through the W3C and the Bytecode Alliance.
The keynote is part of the “Code & Development” track and is designed for intermediate-level developers.
