Managing Multisite Configuration with Config Split at DrupalCon Chicago 2026

Opinionated Patterns for Managing Site-Level, Feature-Level, and Environment Configuration in Drupal Multisite
Managing Multisite Drupal Configuration with Config Split at DrupalCon Chicago 2026

Managing multiple sites from a single Drupal codebase offers immense power, but it also introduces configuration challenges that can quickly become difficult to manage across sites, features, and environments. In my session at DrupalCon Chicago 2026, I’ll explore a practical approach to addressing these challenges using the Config Split module.

In complex multisite setups, one site may need a specific feature while another must exclude it. Development, staging, and production environments often require their own overrides as well. Relying on a simple export-and-import workflow quickly becomes cumbersome and error-prone. In this session, I’ll present an opinionated, repeatable approach that separates site-level, feature-level, and environment-level configuration into clearly defined and manageable layers.

A key part of the approach is using site-level splits to handle per-domain overrides while also creating feature-level splits that can be enabled or disabled across different sites. Environment-specific configuration can then be layered on top to support development, staging, and production workflows without creating configuration conflicts.

I’ll also walk through a directory structure and naming convention that helps prevent configuration overlap and drift over time. Reusable templates can make adding a new site much faster, allowing new installations to be generated through a simple automation command rather than a manual setup process.

During the session, we’ll look at how to scaffold new site splits efficiently, generate new site configurations from templates, and validate configurations to ensure consistency across multiple sites. The goal is to turn what is often a complicated multisite setup into a workflow that can be repeated reliably.

This session is designed for Drupal architects, backend developers maintaining multisite platforms, and technical leads who need predictable and maintainable configuration management. Anyone responsible for managing multisite deployments and keeping configurations consistent across environments should find practical strategies and tooling that simplify the process.

DrupalCon is also one of the best opportunities to reconnect with colleagues in the community and discover what others are building. I’m particularly interested in learning more about the latest advances across the ecosystem, including the growing momentum around AI initiatives in Drupal.

In addition to this session, I’ll also be involved in teaching a Drupal in a Day training during the event, which is always a rewarding opportunity to introduce newcomers to what Drupal can do.
