ECA Session at DrupalCon Chicago Focuses on Expanding Access Beyond Core Users
A session at DrupalCon Chicago 2026 will outline plans to expand the accessibility of the Event, Condition, Action module, as its maintainers prepare the next phase of development. The presentation, scheduled for March 24, focuses on making workflow automation usable for a broader range of Drupal users.
The session, “Next Generation ECA - Vision and Progress update,” will be delivered by Jürgen Haas of LakeDrops. It will take place at 15:00 CDT in Williford C on the third floor of the Hilton Chicago and will present both the long-term direction of the module and progress made so far.
The module, commonly referred to as ECA, enables workflow automation in Drupal through a no-code and low-code approach and is currently used on more than 16,000 sites. However, it is estimated to be used by only around 1% of Drupal users, and the next phase of development aims to significantly broaden its accessibility.
“We heard what works, what frustrates, and what users wish it could do. We went back to the drawing board.”
Haas said the next phase builds on several years of production use and feedback from hundreds of users, with a focus on reducing onboarding complexity and improving usability for people with limited Drupal experience.
According to the session description, the goal is to enable users to begin building workflows quickly while providing guidance that supports more advanced use over time.
The roadmap also expands the intended audience beyond developers, site builders, and project managers, aiming to support a wider range of users who want to create and manage automations without deep technical knowledge.
