DrupalCon Chicago Session Highlights Workflow Approach to Enterprise AI Implementation
A session at DrupalCon Chicago 2026 examined why enterprise AI initiatives often fail when organisations treat artificial intelligence as a feature rather than a workflow system. Titled “Building Enterprise AI Tools: From Concept to Production”, the session was presented by Mike Wilbur and Mark Shropshire. Slides from the session are available on Speaker Deck.
The speakers argued that many enterprise AI projects deliver limited return on investment because teams approach AI as an isolated capability instead of embedding it into existing workflows. This gap between expectation and implementation leads to underused systems and missed opportunities, particularly in large organisations.
The presentation outlined a workflow-based model that automates repetitive tasks while preserving human decision-making. The speakers demonstrated this approach using Tessera, an AI tool developed by Current, which converts high-level project requirements into structured Jira tickets, including epics, issues, and tasks.
The session also detailed the integration and orchestration stack supporting these implementations, including Elvex for integration management and n8n for workflow automation. Demonstrations showed how these tools connect with Drupal APIs and content management systems to support scalable, maintainable enterprise workflows.
The speakers positioned this approach as a practical alternative to both overhyped and under-scoped AI adoption. By focusing on defined use cases, system integration, and maintainable architecture, the session highlighted how enterprise teams can move from experimental AI features to production-ready systems.
