CKEditor 4 End of Life: Transition to CKEditor 5 and LTS Module

Drupal administrators and developers are advised to prepare for the impending End of Life (EOL) of CKEditor 4 within the Drupal ecosystem.

Following its debut in 2012, CKEditor 4 has been a cornerstone of content editing in various Drupal versions, including incorporation into Drupal 8, 9, and 10. However, as of January 1, 2024, the open-source edition of CKEditor 4 will cease to receive security updates, prompting the transition to its successor, CKEditor 5. 

To accommodate those who may require additional time for the migration or are reliant on specific CKEditor 4 features, a dedicated CKEditor 4 LTS (Long-Term Support) module has been introduced, offering extended support until the end of 2026 for those willing to acquire a commercial license.

The CKEditor 4 LTS module ensures continued security coverage and seamless functionality, preserving compatibility with existing configurations and third-party modules. While this extension provides a temporary safeguard, Drupal users are encouraged to consider transitioning to CKEditor 5 for a modernized editing experience facilitated by enhanced features and collaborative capabilities.
