Acquia's Drupal 7 to 10 Migration Insights Unveiled
Acquia shared an insightful blog post by Wim Leers regarding the accomplishments of the Acquia Migrate Accelerate (AM:A) recommendations engine. The blog highlighted the successful achievement of their internal goal – providing vetted migrations for 80% of non-custom modules on Drupal 7 sites running on Acquia Cloud. These vetted migrations were meticulously tested by the AM:A team to ensure seamless functionality and compatibility with real-world data.
The blog post also addressed why AM:A is not directly targeting Drupal 10. The explanation given is the significant effort required, potentially involving the redoing of over 5,000 hours of work, as most migration paths lack explicit test coverage and were developed during the PHP 7 era. With Drupal 10 requiring PHP 8.1, which introduces breaking changes, the current recommendation is to first migrate to Drupal 9 (with or without AM:A) and then proceed to update from Drupal 9 to Drupal 10. Refer to the full blog post for a detailed understanding of the challenges and considerations involved in this migration process.
