Talish Khan Outlines Four Questions for Choosing Drupal Page-Building Tools
Teams choosing page-building tools in Drupal should start with the way editors actually work, senior Drupal architect Talish Khan argues in a blog post published on 24 July 2026. Talish proposes four questions for choosing among Layout Builder, Paragraphs, custom Twig templates, and Drupal's block system. His central distinction is between editors who need to compose page layouts and those who mainly enter structured content.
The framework then asks how much layout variation a site needs, who bears the continuing cost of flexibility, and how team size affects consistency. Talish associates custom templates with repeatable structures, Paragraphs with predefined components that editors can reorder, Layout Builder with free-form page composition, and blocks with largely site-wide content. He argues that greater flexibility can shift more layout decisions to editors and more constraint and maintenance work to developers. The post presents these trade-offs as a decision framework based on Talish's professional experience rather than comparative project data.
Drupal's 2024 page-builder research adds broader context: interview participants reported usability and contributed-module dependencies with Layout Builder, while the same research recorded editing and scalability concerns with Paragraphs. Drupal's documentation also notes that Layout Builder is not enabled by default. The DropTimes has previously covered a comparison of Paragraphs, Layout Builder, and Twig templates and a separate comparison of Paragraphs and Layout Builder.
