Pantheon Begins Cloud Storage FUSE Rollout for New Drupal Sites

Newly created Drupal and WordPress sites began using a Cloud Storage FUSE-backed filesystem for uploaded files on 3 August 2026. In a release note, Pantheon said the rollout will reach all newly created sites by 17 August. The filesystem replaces Valhalla, Pantheon’s existing system for sharing uploaded files across horizontally scaled PHP containers.

For Drupal, the change applies to the sites/default/files directory, while WordPress uploads are stored in wp-content/uploads. Pantheon said the replacement should make backup creation and restoration faster and more reliable, although the release note does not provide benchmark data. The company attributed the move away from Valhalla to the availability of Cloud Storage FUSE through its partnership with Google Cloud.

Existing Free sites are scheduled to migrate on 1 September 2026, followed by Basic sites on 5 October, Performance sites on 16 November and Elite sites on 30 November. The Site details screen includes a Filesystem Generation field, where a value of 2 identifies the replacement filesystem. Pantheon said no additional action is required when new sites are provisioned.
