Pantheon to Demonstrate Outside-In Drupal Agent With Gemini Enterprise in Rotterdam

Pantheon will bring an outside-in Drupal workflow from architectural discussion to a working demonstration at DrupalCon Rotterdam 2026. Josh Koenig and Alejandro Moreno Lopez will show a purpose-built agent running on Google’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and communicating with Drupal through its MCP Server interface on 29 September from 13:30 to 14:15 CEST on the Open Stage.

The model changes where selected Drupal work begins. Instead of requiring a user to start every AI-assisted task inside the CMS, an external agent can call Drupal capabilities made available to it. Drupal continues to provide the content model, permissions, and defined actions behind those requests, while another interface can become the starting point for the user.

Josh told The DropTimes that Pantheon sees growing recognition of this “outside-in” approach as an important shift for Drupal. He argues that the user experience of a CMS could eventually extend well beyond adding an embedded chatbot or assistant to the administration interface.

Josh described one possible future in which some people might log in to Drupal mainly to fine-tune details or adjust copy rather than using its administrative interface as the starting point for every task. That is his projection about how CMS use could change. The Rotterdam session offers a more immediate test: whether an external agent can use defined Drupal tools to carry out useful work end to end.

Drupal’s AI Initiative describes this architecture as Outside AI. In its shorthand, Inside AI means a person uses Drupal and Drupal uses AI to assist them; Outside AI means a person uses an agent and the agent uses Drupal. The initiative argues that external agents still require Drupal to expose stable capabilities, scoped identities, permissions, governed actions, and ways to verify what happened.

Tool API and the MCP Server ecosystem provide part of that foundation. Tool API defines executable Drupal functionality with typed inputs and outputs, while MCP Server Tool Bridge can expose selected Tool API operations as MCP tools for compatible clients. That gives an external agent defined actions to call instead of requiring it to imitate a person navigating the Drupal administration interface.

The wider infrastructure remains under active development. Agent Access, for example, combines Simple OAuth, Tool API, and MCP Server so external assistants can connect through a Drupal account while Drupal permissions continue to apply. The project currently has an alpha release and is not covered by Drupal’s security advisory policy, so its existence should not be read as evidence that the broader Outside AI stack has reached uniform production maturity.

Pantheon’s demonstration puts Google’s agent technology on the external side of this architecture. Google describes Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform as infrastructure for building, deploying, governing, and operating enterprise agents, while its Agent Development Kit provides a framework for constructing agents that can use tools and participate in more complex workflows.

Josh said the session is intended to make that connection tangible rather than present it only as a future architecture.

The official session description says the demonstration will combine Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and its Agent Development Kit with Drupal’s MCP ecosystem. Josh said attendees should leave with a clearer understanding of how outside-in AI could be applied to an existing Drupal project or a new site build, as well as the current state of agent development.

The supplied responses do not include benchmarks, production deployment data, or measurements showing that this approach reduces time or cost compared with conventional Drupal administration or existing automation. Its immediate editorial significance is therefore as a working demonstration of an emerging interaction model rather than proof that external agents should replace established Drupal workflows.

Pantheon’s participation also has a commercial purpose. Josh said the company is continuing to build its presence across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa and sees major events as important for making connections and establishing credibility. He added that conference conversations can influence Pantheon’s corporate priorities and product roadmap, while he is particularly interested in how agency partners are responding to the challenges and opportunities created by increased AI use.

Josh said he is also looking forward to seeing what other AI work the Drupal community is bringing to the event. For attendees, the demonstration provides a chance to examine the narrower practical question behind Pantheon’s broader argument: what Drupal needs to expose, control, and verify when the person initiating the work is interacting with an agent somewhere else.
