Dries Buytaert’s Acquia Retrospective 2021
Drupal founder Dries Buytaert, in his blog ‘Acquia Retrospective 2021’, reflects on the evolution of Acquia as a business and his personal growth through the last year. He covered topics like business momentum, 2021 innovations, giving back to open source, and personal developments.
In his thirteenth yearly retrospective, Dries talks about their unbroken15 year revenue growth streak. Acquia is now a company with around 1,500 employees worldwide, with over 400 employees more than last year. They were also named ‘Best Place to Work’ in Boston and the UK. They also continue to focus on their diversity and inclusion effort by adding Juneteenth and Indigenous People’s Day as official Acquia-observed holidays in the US.
Aquia served almost 600 billion HTTP requests in 2021, with their Customer Data Platform delivering over 1 trillion Machine Predictions in the last year. Through 2021 they have supported nearly a quarter of the Fortune 100 organizations like J.Crew, Fannie Mae, and Bayer.
As product highlights of 2021, Dries talks about Acquia Cloud Next and the acquisition of Widen. He also mentioned being placed as leaders in placement by Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platform, IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Content Management Systems for Persuasive Digital Experience, and Foster Agile CMS wave some of the industry’s best analyst firms. Acquia was also named midsize enterprise customers choice by Gartner Peer Insight for Digital Experience Platform.
While talking about giving back to open source, Dries mentions Acquia’s continued investment in Mautic, an open-source marketing automation company. He also added that in 2021 Acquia was the top contributor to both Drupal and Mautic that are both PHP applications. Acquia also became one of the founding members of the PHP Foundation, supporting the launch with a $25,000 donation.
To scale Acquia’s operations, they decided to organize the company into three internal business units, Drupal Cloud, Marketing Cloud, and Content Cloud (WIden), with its own General Manager. This helped Dries as work is now very operational, and he can focus more on strategic work, product portfolio management, acquisitions, thought leadership, and more.
