Heading to Barcelona? Stop by LagoonCon Barcelona 2024!
For those of you heading to Barcelona this time to attend the DrupalCon Europe 2024, here is an added opportunity for more knowledge and connections. On September 23, 2024, LagoonCon Barcelona will host developers, product managers, and technology leaders for a free event focused on improving the management of Drupal websites through the open-source platform, Lagoon. The event at the Hotel Barcelona Princess offers a deep dive into Lagoon's capabilities and its role in simplifying application delivery for Drupal and other open-source frameworks.
LagoonCon is timed to precede DrupalCon Barcelona, giving attendees a chance to explore one of the most powerful tools for managing web platforms before the larger conference begins. Lagoon is a developer-oriented application delivery platform designed to streamline workflows for hosting and scaling sites. Whether attendees are responsible for a few Drupal sites or managing thousands of diverse applications, LagoonCon offers practical insights on improving efficiency and maximising the potential of open-source technology.
Reflecting on past conferences in Pittsburgh and Portland, the LagoonCon team has worked hard to refine this year’s event. Toby Bellwood, Director of Product Engineering at Lagoon, emphasized that one key focus for 2024 is transparency.
"We believe transparency is paramount, so we will discuss the team’s work, product decisions, and community involvement a bit more,"
Toby explains. The goal is to provide attendees with a deeper understanding of how Lagoon is evolving and what role the community plays in that growth.
The 2024 event will specifically cater to the needs of enterprise customers, a crucial segment of Lagoon’s user base. Toby noted that many of these enterprises manage multiple sites, necessitating a more robust feature set.
"We’ve updated the way we work with SSH keys, added more functionality to track site rollouts, and introduced prompts to help users build more secure sites,"
he says. These updates aim to improve efficiency and address common challenges enterprises face when managing complex web platforms.
Toby's session, "Lagoon Project Update", will provide an overview of the platform’s developments throughout 2024 and share plans for its future.
"My session will cover some of the work that my team has been up to in the last year or so. I covered an earlier period in Portland, so this will recap a bit of that and uncover everything since."
A highlight of the conference will be John Faber’s session, which will explore whether running Drupal as a decoupled stack can improve return on investment (ROI). John, Managing Partner at Chapter Three, draws on real-world experience with a recent project for the National Association of Realtors, where the decoupled approach proved cost-effective.
"Developer resources and modern workflows have reduced friction and sped up development, leading to more ROI efficiencies. The significant cost differences become evident when scaling traditional Drupal versus Decoupled Drupal. Developer resources and modern workflows have reduced friction and sped up development, leading to more ROI efficiencies. "
John explains. His talk will offer critical insights for businesses looking to optimize their web platforms.
"John’s talk will go a bit “behind” decoupling. Chapter Three has a lot of experience in this space, and he’ll provide some very useful insights to anybody considering the pros and cons."
vouches Toby.
He is also optimistic about another key session that will be presented by Lauren Morris, Product Manager at amazee.io, who will focus on the collaboration between product and engineering teams.
"We’ve had a lot of success implementing processes and strategies for improving our approach to building and working on Lagoon,"
Lauren says. Her talk will outline how these workflows have boosted team productivity and fostered creativity, providing actionable strategies for other development teams to adopt. She also adds,
"LagoonCon felt like the right opportunity to share our approach and what we’ve learned."
The event's broader theme is the role of open source in modern product ecosystems. Michael Schmid, Head of Product at Mirantis, will explore how open-source tools like Lagoon fit into larger corporate strategies, driving innovation and flexibility.
"We’ve tried to provide talks that give greater open-source insight—understanding what the team has done and how Open Source fits into a larger corporate ecosystem,"
Toby adds. Michael’s session will delve into the benefits of embracing open-source solutions within a wider product suite.
As LagoonCon 2024 approaches, excitement is mounting not only for the event but for DrupalCon Barcelona itself. Each speaker expressed their anticipation for the larger DrupalCon community gathering. For Toby, it’s a chance to reconnect:
"I’m really looking forward to seeing how the conversation around DrupalCMS/Starshot plays out - it’s a really interesting direction, and whilst it’s slightly outside of our normal operating space (GitOps, etc), there are a lot of positives that it will bring to the overall Drupal experience for first-timers that will be invaluable in not only retaining relevancy but increasing Drupal’s market share."
John Faber is eager to see how Next-Drupal is being adopted across Europe, particularly during the Decoupled Birds of a Feather (BOF) session.
"DrupalCons are always a highlight for me—it’s a great chance to spend quality time with my team and catch up with colleagues from across the industry. I’m also looking forward to the European Business Leaders dinner.
he says. Not to mention, his excitement in exploring Barcelona.
For Lauren Morris, DrupalCon Barcelona will be her first, and she’s particularly excited about meeting colleagues in person.
"On a scale of 1 to 10, I’m an ELEVEN!"
she exclaims. Her enthusiasm reflects the energy surrounding LagoonCon 2024 and its role as a gateway to the broader discussions that will take place at DrupalCon.
With a clear focus on practical solutions, enhanced transparency, and deeper discussions on enterprise needs, LagoonCon Barcelona 2024 promises to deliver actionable insights for attendees. For those seeking to improve their application delivery strategies and capitalize on the potential of open-source technology, this year's event is set to provide substantial value ahead of the much-anticipated DrupalCon.
