Pierre Dureau’s DrupalCon Atlanta Session on Design Systems Now Available on YouTube

Pierre Dureau’s session from DrupalCon Atlanta 2025, titled “Design systems, the Drupal way,” is now available to watch on the Drupal Association’s official YouTube channel. In the session, Pierre explores how to implement a comprehensive design system within a Drupal theme, focusing on portability, developer-friendliness, and deep integration with the Drupal admin UI.

The talk outlines the challenges of decoupling design systems from business logic or application state and highlights the importance of using declarative, UI-oriented formats. Pierre emphasizes that while tools like Single Directory Components (SDC) and the upcoming Core Icon API offer strong foundations, true design systems must also define style utilities, layout systems, icon packs, variables, swappable modes, and more, all integrated cleanly into the Drupal API.

As co-maintainer of SDC, author of the Icon API, and leader of the UI Suite initiative, Dureau provides practical examples using public design systems such as Bootstrap, DaisyUI, and USWDS.
