Drupal AI Initiative Formalises Delivery Structure to Execute 2026 Roadmap
The Drupal AI Initiative has formalised its operational structure to support execution of its 2026 roadmap, transitioning from strategic planning into coordinated delivery across innovation and product development. The update was published on Drupal.org by Kristen Pol, a representative of Salsa Digital, one of the initiative's sponsoring organisations and a member of the Drupal Starshot Advisory Council, which oversees Drupal CMS development.
Launched in June 2025 with the release of Drupal AI Strategy 1.0 under the Drupal Starshot programme, the initiative has grown into a sponsor-funded collaboration backed by 28 organisations. Sponsors collectively pledge more than 23 full-time equivalent contributors, representing over 50 individual contributors, and more than $1.5 million in combined cash and in-kind support.
The 2026 roadmap defines eight priority capabilities intended to deliver stable and governed AI functionality within Drupal CMS. Work now spans leadership, UX, quality assurance, core development, innovation, marketing, and product development. The stated emphasis is on predictable execution and production-ready outcomes rather than experimental exploration.
To coordinate delivery at scale, the initiative conducted a formal Request for Proposals process that began at DrupalCon Vienna in October 2025. The RFP was limited to sponsoring organisations and included structured evaluation phases covering governance, backlog management, quality assurance, financial oversight, and prior Drupal and AI contribution experience. Contracts were awarded in early January for an initial six-month term, after which the process is expected to repeat.
QED42 will coordinate the innovation workstream, while 1xINTERNET will lead product development, focusing on transitioning innovation into production-ready capabilities. According to the update, two development sprints have been completed and a third is underway.
The initiative describes this phase as disciplined execution supported by structured sprint cycles and clearer backlog alignment. Sponsors and contributors are invited to align their work with the roadmap as the initiative moves deeper into coordinated delivery for 2026.
