Kalamuna and Tyk Modernize MTC's API System for Improved Transit Data

Kalamuna, a team of experts in designing purpose-driven, accessible websites, partnered with Tyk to modernize the Metropolitan Transportation Commission's (MTC) API system for the 511.org gateway, which aggregates real-time traffic and transit data from 27 agencies in the Bay Area. Tasked with migrating the MTC’s outdated proxy system to a modern, open-source API gateway, Kalamuna implemented Tyk’s API Gateway, complemented by 24 JSON REST APIs and custom middleware. This upgrade improved security, usability, and reliability. Since its February 2023 launch, the new gateway has processed over 325 million API calls with a 99.88% success rate, significantly enhancing system maintenance and accessibility for the MTC.
