Pantheon Introduces Content Publisher: From Google Docs to the Web
"At Pantheon, for years, we have increasingly felt that website publishing is fundamentally broken."
begins the Pantheon article introducing Pantheon Content Publisher for Google Docs. As a journalist getting behind the content publishing workflow, I need to reiterate, just like how Tintin might agree to Captain Haddock, "Aye, Aye, Captain, I hear you."
Josh Koenig, Co-Founder at Pantheon shares that his great and powerful co-founder, Zack Rosen started down this path in earnest Circa Spring 2023, and from then on it has been the 'skunkworks innovation mode' for Pantheon. Now, they have released the beta version for Pantheon Content Publisher.
"It's still early days, and we're looking for a small but committed group of people who want to build with us and turn this into something truly great. Together we can improve the quality of our professional lives, and the quality of the web itself."
adds Josh.
With Content Publisher, Pantheon is working back to the roots of innovation, rethinking how you write, edit, collaborate, and publish to the web. The motivation is rather simple: make it radically simpler for writers to create and publish web content safely and seamlessly directly from Google Docs to WordPress, Drupal, and Next.js websites.
From a journalistic perspective, the problem addressed by Pantheon Content Publisher is fundamentally time-saving and less tiring. One usually has to write and edit in Google Docs and then copy-paste the content into WP and Drupal because Docs and Word today do not connect with CMS tools like WordPress and Drupal.
With Content Publisher, the writer can create a document on Google Docs using all their favourite tools and click a button to publish it to their website. The Content Publisher add-on appears as a sidebar as you edit content in Google Docs.
They can also get a preview of how it will render on the website. As you work in the Google Doc, images, structured components, and formatting appear as fully rendered elements in the website preview. You can switch between screen sizes and interact with the preview.
Pantheon Content Publisher also ensures a great editorial workflow; it addresses concerns about website security by integrating a robust editorial workflow that ensures governance, compliance, and accessibility. The system normalizes and sanitizes content, removes non-web-optimized styles, and flags issues with compliance or accessibility. Its pluggable content review process supports checks for brand standards and accessibility, with input from top editorial teams to refine and strengthen these features.
All this while leveraging built-in generative AI features, Content Publisher includes AI powered by Google Vertex to assist writers and editors with content summaries, metadata suggestions to enhance SEO, and enhanced search. Intuitive tools allow writers to create and organize content collections into sections and sub-sections, order them, and choose how to hide or reveal them on their website.
This detailed blog post introducing Pantheon Content Publisher by Roland Bendetti and Zack Rosen provides more details into how the core technology works in Content Publisher: "Safely Publish to Web from Google Docs with Pantheon Content Publisher." The blog post also shares that the Content Publisher should not be confused with a CMS; rather, it is a content integration service that integrates with your CMS. It is also not for every website.
