Drupal AI Webinar Examines Responsible AI Moderation in World Cancer Day Campaign

Drupal AI Webinar Explores Responsible AI Moderation for World Cancer Day Stories

Organisers of the Drupal AI initiative will host a live webinar on 16 March 2026, examining how artificial intelligence was used to support the moderation of personal stories submitted during the World Cancer Day campaign. The session will present the initiative as a practical case study of using AI within a Drupal-based editorial workflow.

The event, titled “Helping people tell their cancer stories using AI: Lessons from World Cancer Day,” will take place at 14:00 UTC. It forms part of the wider Drupal AI initiative and will explore how moderators managed large volumes of sensitive user-generated content collected through World Cancer Day, the global awareness campaign organised by the Union for International Cancer Control.

The webinar centres on a practical challenge faced by the campaign team. Each year, World Cancer Day invites people affected by cancer to share personal experiences, resulting in hundreds of submissions arriving from multiple countries in a short period. According to a Drupal.org post by Paul D Johnson, reviewing these accounts carefully while preparing them for publication placed significant pressure on a small moderation team.

To address the issue, the World Cancer Day team worked with 1xINTERNET, a digital agency specialising in Drupal development, to explore how artificial intelligence could assist moderators working within their editorial workflow. Rather than automating moderation entirely, the system was designed to support human reviewers in assessing and organising incoming stories.

Organisers describe the approach as an example of responsible AI use in content moderation. In this model, AI tools help process submissions more efficiently while final editorial judgement remains with human moderators responsible for handling sensitive personal experiences.

The webinar will feature three speakers connected to the initiative. Charles Andrew Revkin, a communications professional working on the World Cancer Day campaign at the Union for International Cancer Control, will discuss the campaign’s storytelling work. Diego Costa, chief operating officer at 1xINTERNET, will address the technical and operational aspects of the project. Matthew Saunders, AI ambassador at amazee.io and a long-time Drupal community member, will provide a perspective on responsible adoption of artificial intelligence.

The session is intended for organisational leaders, communications teams, and others exploring practical ways to introduce AI into content operations while maintaining oversight and editorial responsibility. Organisers say a recording will be shared with registered participants who cannot attend the live broadcast. Find more details here.

The webinar is part of a series of webinars and global events organised by the Drupal AI initiative. For full details, visit the events calendar.
