Drupal at 25: AI Reshapes Workflows and Raises Quality Pressures

Drupal’s 25th anniversary coincides with a shift in how websites are built and managed, driven by rapid advances in artificial intelligence. In his State of Drupal 2026 keynote, Dries Buytaert describes this moment as both a disruption and a structural opportunity for the platform.

The presentation outlines how AI is accelerating site building workflows. Prototyping can now be completed quickly using AI tools, with Drupal providing the underlying architecture for governance, scalability, and integration. Initiatives such as Drupal Canvas and the Context Control Center demonstrate how AI can assist in generating structured content while relying on defined systems for consistency and control.

At the same time, the keynote highlights pressure on the open source ecosystem. As AI lowers the barrier to contribution, the volume of patches increases while quality can decline. This places additional review burden on maintainers and reinforces the need for contributors to understand and validate AI-generated code before submission.
