Acquia Launches Fair Trade Initiative Linking Partner Revenue to Drupal Association Funding
Enterprise Drupal company Acquia has launched a new Fair Trade Initiative that directs 2% of eligible revenue-driven partner transactions to the Drupal Association, embedding ecosystem funding directly into its updated Acquia Partner Program.
The initiative was announced from Boston, Massachusetts, and is effective immediately. According to Acquia, the programme is intended to address long-term sustainability challenges in open source ecosystems by structurally linking commercial growth to community reinvestment. Unlike sponsorship campaigns or discretionary grants, the contribution mechanism is integrated directly into partner transaction economics.
Under the programme, the 2% contribution is funded entirely by Acquia and does not reduce partner revenue or incentives. Contributions will be credited in the participating partner’s name and tracked publicly through the Acquia Partner Portal. Acquia also said qualifying contributions may count toward Drupal Association partner and membership programmes, potentially affecting recognition and participation status within the Drupal ecosystem.
James Sims, vice president of partners at Acquia, described the initiative as an effort to establish a direct link between commercial Drupal growth and project sustainability. In the company announcement, James said the open-source ecosystem has historically relied on voluntary reinvestment and discretionary community funding rather than on structurally integrated economic models.
Drupal creator Dries Buytaert also framed the initiative as a structural funding mechanism rather than a one-time sponsorship effort. In a published commentary, Dries wrote that the programme connects partner success, Drupal Association funding, and Acquia’s commercial incentives through a shared economic model intended to scale alongside Drupal adoption.
The announcement positions the programme within a broader effort to formalise long-term commercial support for Drupal stewardship and infrastructure. The Drupal Association is the non-profit organisation responsible for Drupal.org infrastructure, community programmes, events, and project coordination across the Drupal ecosystem.
Acquia said organisations purchasing Drupal implementation services through participating partners will indirectly contribute to the Drupal ecosystem funding without additional customer cost. The company stated that customer pricing and partner compensation remain unchanged because the contribution is funded entirely by Acquia.
The Fair Trade Initiative launches alongside Acquia’s updated partner programme and remains subject to eligibility requirements and programme terms. Additional programme details, participation criteria, and eligibility information are available through Acquia’s partner programme documentation and Fair Trade Initiative materials.
