Drupal Agency Mergers Accelerate as Consolidation Reshapes the Ecosystem
Consolidation among Drupal agencies is accelerating, according to the Digital Center of Excellence (DCoE). In a 13 February 2026 publication, the organization states that mergers and acquisitions activity is expected to intensify over the next three to five years.
The organization attributes the trend to a combination of financial pressure, rising client expectations, evolving delivery models and a generational transition among agency founders. Many leaders who built Drupal agencies in the platform’s early years are approaching retirement, creating succession challenges at the same time that margins tighten and competition intensifies.
The report references a series of recent and historic transactions as indicators of consolidation, including the 2026 merger of 1XINTERNET and React Online, Kanopi Studios’ acquisition of Chapter Three, and JAKALA’s 2023 acquisition of FFW. Additional deals cited include acquisitions involving MaterialPlus, WordSphere LLC, LakeDrops and other regional agencies, which together signal sustained consolidation across Europe and North America.
DCoE suggests that earlier transactions often involved agencies with existing working relationships, reducing integration risk. However, future activity may increasingly include private equity participation, non-Drupal digital agencies acquiring capability, distressed sales and regional roll-up strategies. The publication notes that valuation gaps between buyers and sellers remain common, particularly as founders navigate exit preparation, recurring revenue evaluation and leadership succession planning.
Looking ahead, DCoE frames consolidation as a structural evolution rather than a temporary fluctuation. Agencies are likely to face three strategic paths: merge to gain scale, sell while valuations remain viable, or struggle under sustained margin pressure and modernization challenges. The organization states it is developing educational resources and guidance tailored to Drupal agency leaders navigating mergers and acquisitions.
